About the event
Back to School in Times of War: Supporting Children, Families, and Educators
September brings the joy of a new season, but also the stress of back-to-school transitions. For children and families living through war, these challenges are intensified by uncertainty, disrupted routines, emotional dysregulation, and ongoing trauma. Parents, teachers, and counselors may also struggle with burnout and fear while trying to create stability.
Join Mary Jeppsen, PhD, a Licensed Professional Counselor, Marriage and Family Therapist, and supervisor at First Aid of the Soul, for an informal conversation and Q&A on how to support children and educators during this critical time. Together, we will explore how to foster resilience, create a sense of safety, and prepare for a new school year amidst the uncertainty of war.
This session is designed for parents, teachers, and school counselors seeking supportive dialogue and practical tools to help children, and themselves, navigate a new school year amidst uncertainty.
Objectives:
Understand key insights into trauma, child development, and resilience during times of crisis.
Gain practical strategies to help children feel safe and supported at school and at home.
Learn approaches for parents, teachers, and counselors to cope with burnout and emotional strain.
Presenter:
Mary Jeppsen is a licensed Professional Counselor and Marriage and Family Therapist with a PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision. She spent half her career working with children and teens in school-based and clinical settings. She has extensive training in Play Therapy, Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Emotion Focused Family Therapy. Mary is in private practice and works with individuals and families now in Springfield, Missouri. Her main focus is healing and maintaining connection in relationships, and helping parents parent. Mary has raised 11 children of her own. Parenting such a large and diverse family makes her uniquely qualified to assist struggling parents and families.
